Jorge Juan

My son is such a blessing. He is really smart. He just turned 5 on July 21st. He sure loves to read. He has been reading for quite some time now, I believe since he was 3.5. He started out from before 2 years of age reading words on flashcards. As a mother and a teacher, I knew he could read. It was not from memory either. He was actually reading. Sounding out letter and words, making educated guesses, comprehending, asking questions and able to retell the story in his own words. He is going to enter Kindergarten in a few weeks. He is very excited, I am too..so is Daddy. I am nervous, I must admit. You see my son is amazing and even extraordinary. He does not like to clean his room, typical right? The other day he was in his room, supposed to be cleaning it, instead I find him reading book, after book- in completion. I was amazed, so proud..at that time the mess did not matter. I am so happy that my son loves books and enjoys reading, it is not a task but it is his hobby - one that will take him far..but you know not too far from mommy and daddy.

With all that being said, here is a little piece of background information:

My son did not talk until after his third birthday. It was only words, here and there. Around 3.5 ,some sentences and from there with the help of 2 great SLPs- he started speaking, responding, asking appropriately. Now he strikes up conversations and asks hard questions that would even make Einstein scratch his head.I used to think he was deaf when he was 1 - 2.5 but thank God he can hear. He has a super ability that I am destined to comprehend. He is on the autism spectrum and I would not change it for the world.

Learn the signs. Autism is not a life sentence, it is only a word.

As a mommy, I do it for my child and as a teacher I would do it for yours.

God bless.

  1. Great post. I am a high school AP Psychology teacher. We talk about invisible diagnoses like Autism and understanding people who are atypical. I like showing this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vQsY0rD8BQ&list=PLAEEFD712AC75F83E&index=47
The music is a bit cheesy but it's a good one.
I am also a new blogger and would love your input: duhnel.com. Have a great start to the new school year!
