Things have been going great at Loorducation. We have been very active. This past week we made many different sensory bags. We also used kinetic sand and cornstarch mixed with water for great sensory fun. These experiences went very well. After all the hand son activities, Jorge Juan wanted to play school. Without being prompted, he started to write spelling words and continued to write and draw. This was excellent. The sensory activities calmed him down and worked up his fine motor skills to prepare his hands for writing – willingly. I loved it, we went with it. We played school. He was the teacher. He even had to put his glasses on. He gave me a spelling test and corrected it with a star and happy face. He was so excited. This was great. He was really into it. He loves school and loves to learn. I am very blessed. His writing skills are coming along well. By giving him options and well needed breaks in between homework from the school week, he feels more secure and less pressured. Thus, causing him to be engaged and engrossed in spontaneous learning activities. Which, in turn, will gear him up and ready him for the next week of school academics. When children feel well, they will learn well. That is the bottom line. The well being comes first.

Jorge Juan is Au-Some

Yes, Jorge Juan is Au-some. He is doing well n ESY. Still working on him saying good morning and thank you to the bus driver. Sometimes when he comes home, he is so stimulated and excited that he does not say hello to me or my husband. We re working very diligently with him on that one. We do not want to make him feel uncomfortable but at the same time, we want him to be polite and at very least acknowledge others with a hello when he is entering a home or room. He has been enjoying the trampoline park and being with the children at the Y also. He loves being around other children as it really makes him feel good. He loves company. It is great for his social skills. Speaking of that, he has been communicating well with the other boys at karate, engaging in back and forth dialogue. He is ausome, and autism will never stop him. It will empower him, full force. I am not sure if he knows or understands that he is different. He knows he has autism but does not exactly what it means and the effect it has etc, etc. He is a healthy child and that is what matters. He is keeping busy and active this summer. On the go, learning new things. I let him be- a “typical” child. He runs, plays and all that fun stuff. He wants to be included in all things. Any child that befriends my son will be rewarded with an honest, loving caring friendship. My son is wise beyond his years. He talks and repeats and repeats and states facts about animals and that is who he is. I never knew there were so many different types of geckos or that that octopuses have tentacle regeneration or that hawks use their talons for picking up prey – I did not even know what a talon was (lol) He is my indigo baby, my gift from God. Autism is just the icing on the cake we call Jorge Juan. It is not always easy but it IS easy to love him.

My Boy: Part 73

The PPT meeting at the end of JJ’s Kindergarten school year was a success. We are very satisfied with how the meeting flowed. It was comfortable being there. Everyone who has worked with my son over the past school year genuinely knows him. His specialized instruction teacher, his general education teacher, his speech and occupational therapists, principal, social worker and school psychologist. The meeting went on for over an hour and a half I believe. We lost track of time. As a mommy, I felt so warm and honored that they know my son on a personal level and that he is not just another student, another kid, but a child that is treated with love and respect in which all children deserve.
Tomorrow Jorge will being started ESY or extended school year until July 25th.He is excited. He says and thinks he is going to high school. It is OK< we will let him think that. He also mentions that he will miss his school and I reassure. him that he will be going back there at the end of August
So tomorrow it is..a new bus, a new bus driver, a new school, new teachers,, So yes, my husband and I will be following the bus all the way to the new school. It is a bit far. We want to make sure our son is taken care of and is safe. He will be going from 8 in the morning until 12:30 in the afternoon. This leaves plenty of time for play and exploration and open ended learning fun.

Autism Community – Mommies on a Mission

Your child has Autism too? I get it!!! I understand!! I am here for you and we are all in this together. From one end of the spectrum to the other. We are here,all tied together for our children. We are connected, miles apart, but deeply connected with roots of love and faith for progression, awareness and acceptance for our children. They are different, not less. I am happy to have my piece of the puzzle and I am so happy and proud to say that I have met a group of other mommies who have children on the spectrum, we get it. We are going in the same direction and I would love for you to meet them and visit their blogs. Social media is a wonderful, positive thing when used correctly. That is what we have done and been doing. We are hear to spread the word that autism is not a life sentence. It is a book, on its own and each one of our children is a different chapter. We are from all over the United States but at times it feels like we are right next to one another cause we get it. Stimming, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, ABA, Food aversions, obsessions and so on. Autism is a part of our lives. It brings value and experiences. The diagnosis of my son almost 3 years ago brought me and my husband to tears but we had to use those tears as fuel for the future. Our son needs us and we all need each other. Autism is our journey. It is not about the destination but what we do along the way to empower one another.I am blessed to have come in contact with some strong women who have children on the spectrum. I am learning from them all of the time. We talk, we share..we get it- Autism.

A Little Bit...

My Boy: Part 70

“Is there school today, Mommy?” Yes, there is!!! Rainy day, but there is school today. Only a few days left, so enjoy the last days of Kindergarten. It just seems like yesterday that he started Kindergarten at a new school and with a school bus. This school year has gone by so fast. It was a great year and my son has been blessed with great teachers, therapists and principal. The team really works together for the benefit of Jorge Juan. They know him very well. What they have to say at the PPT meeting is right on. I just sit back and smile because I know that they pay close attention to my son giving what they have to say about his personality, characteristics, obsessions etc.

A quick rundown – Jorge is 5 years old and will turn 6 on July 21st. He was diagnosed with autism after his 3rd birthday. At that time, he was in the middle of the spectrum – Non verbal among other delays. He loves animals, insects and tiny toys. He has been reading since before he could speak and now is reading well beyond the benchmarks fro Kinder. He is kind and lovable. He loves babies and kids. He is an orange belt in Tiny Tiger Tang Soo Do karate. He loves nature. He flaps and shakes his hands when he is excited but not as often as he use to do when he was younger. He used to run back and forth humming super loud. He loves books and riding the school bus. That is just part of him in a small nutshell. there is so much beyond this. SO MUCH : )

Autism will never stop him. He is on a roll. He is improving all the time. His autism does not need a CURE. Who would want to cure a child that is full of LOVE, happiness, affection, peace…..and has so much to TEACH the world? Jorge Juan just may be the CURE for the typical world.

My Boy: Part Sixty9

Time has been flying by. The school year is almost at an end. Jorge Juan has been super busy. So busy that it i shard to catch up with him. He has been reading up a storm and asking a bazillion questions, like really can not even keep count. Like asking questions as soon as he opens his eyes in the morning. That is a great thing, right? We have waited a long time to hear him speak. His questions are detailed and specific, mostly about animals. Yes, animals- his obsession. he LOVES all animals, all insects and things like that. Oh yes and Lizards must be called by their specific names. I can never call a chameleon a bearded dragon or iguana. Every animal has it’s name. That IS that!!! I love it but I do have to admit at times, it gets really exhausting. There is  a lot of repetition. A lot. What do animals eat? Where do they live? Does it lay eggs? Where do they come from? So on and so forth…

We had his PPT meeting last week. He is doing great. On his way and ready for the first grade. Busy..busy. Today we went on a field trip to the zoo. he loved it of course, there were ANIMALS there!!! Woohoo, except, at the end, he did NOT want to leave. He had a mini meltdown but his teacher was able to calm him down once we walked back to the bus. I held it together. I dropped him back off at school and enjoyed the 2 plus hours that were left for him to be at school. Counting down to the last day at school. For the month of July, Jorge Juan will be attending school. It is a special program for children with autism. 

Next year, Jorge will have the same ASD teacher and aides and have a general education first grade teacher as well. He really enjoys taking the school bus and riding with his friends. We believe this really helped him greatly with his social skills and being comfortable around people too. Knowing Jorge, he probably has a million ideas in his head of what he would like to do in the summer. I know a lot will have to do with animals, too. The key is to keep him engaged and focused, learning and having fun all rolled into one. Being on the spectrum must be one interesting ride.

About Me

My name is Danielle.I have obtained my M.Ed with a concentration in Teaching and Learning.I also hold a Bachelors of Science Degree in Child Studies from Post University.I have learned so much studying education. It is my passion. It brings me joy.
I completed my first student teaching practicum at a public school in the city where I was able to work in two different classrooms. Both classes were Kindergarten.I also completed my observations and assessments in early childhood education at the same public school.My second student teaching experience was at a private school where I worked in a pre kindergarten classroom up until a week before receiving my degree the executive director asked for my resume while I was student teaching so I gave it to her. Two days after I obtained my degree, she called me for an interview. I went to the interview and she must have liked me because she told me she wanted to see how I interact with the children and teach. I was to go back the next week to be observed while working the day inside the pre kindergarten classroom.The second day, she called me into the office to tell me she liked me a lot and offered me a job as the lead pre kindergarten teacher at the school where I did my last student teaching practicum until they opened the brand new school in a month. I never got to go to the new school since the staff and parents really liked me, I stayed where I was placed.Two weeks after my interview I started working inside of the classroom for 9 hours each day. I looked forward to going to work every morning.In June 2013, I resigned from my position as a lead teacher because I wanted to prepare my son, who is on the autism spectrum, for Kindergarten in the coming fall. During the summer of 2013, I taught my son and reinforced many skills. I worked with him in all areas and subjects focusing on his well being.
I am a very happily married woman. My husband Jorge is a great, hard working man. I am blessed to have him and our son in my life. I love my family very much. My husband is very supportive in every way and encouraged me even more to obtain my Masters in Education sooner than I have thought I would.

I love teaching children. It is a true passion of mine. I enjoy play based, project based and constructivist based learning.I enjoy painting and doing arts and crafts. I love creating original projects and lessons for children.I also enjoy taking photos of what I create and sharing them with others. I enjoy documenting the things that I do. I have built a wonderful PLE that I am very proud of and that I look forward to expanding. I am into brain games and use the speed reading program EyeQ.I also do Sudoku.I like to read new age books such as The Four Agreements, The Secret and The Power. I am a big advocate for Autism. For the past couple of years we have been walking for Autism and have raised money to support the cause.I enjoy creating autism awareness pins, ribbons and crafts.I love animals. I have two guinea pigs, George and Zebra Isabelle- my son named both of them.I like taking pictures of things that have meaning to me and enhancing them with different filters to share on the internet.I am so happy that I can share my son’s journey here on my blog hoping that it inspires people everyday. I want to do many things with my passion like writing children’s books and creating my brand for educational supplies and related things.
I love to cook. I would rather be on the internet than watch TV but when I do watch it is something like TedTalks, documentaries, sitcoms or a good movie based on real life.I believe in Karma and giving back as well as paying it forward x 10. I would rather be home with my family than partying or hanging out, unless it is at Barnes and Noble, we love that place.I love traveling. I have been to Canada, Panama and Ecuador. Actually every year we visit my husband’s family in Ecuador. I love the culture. I learned to speak, read and write Spanish about 11.5 years ago. I enjoy teaching English to native Spanish speakers and teaching Spanish to children.
I love God > anything because He placed this passion in my heart. He gave me my husband and our son and continues to bless us each and every day.
