GEO Board

An easy DIY Geo Board. Fun, practical and awesome!! Great for early child education mathematics / geometry skills and concepts. Hands on exploration. 

This is the first geo board that I made using an old cork board, colored push pins and rubber bands. The marbles were added later on for some extra gaming fun although they are not necessary - but in fact, go great with this.

 

1. Start with a small cork board. You can get them anywhere from the dollar store to IKEA. Any shape is good to use. I find that rectangular is best but you can choose circular, square or whatever you find available. Sometimes stores have cork board rolls where you can cut up and make your own shapes. Lots of options.

2.Get some colorful pushpins. Any pushpins will do but the colored ones can help with color recognition, patterning and order. Place the pushpins strategically on the cork board. Make rows and column (suggestion).

3. Have different colored and different size rubber bands available for use. Model for a child on how to properly place the rubber bands around some push pins - show by making a small square. Children are smarter than we may think, they will get the hang of it just like THAT! 

4. Let them explore, play and learn! You can draw some shapes and ask them to model the shapes. They can get really creative. It is a great open ended learning experience.

Welcome to Constructive Kinder by Loorducation

Constructive Kinder is focused on a hands on learning approach in Kindergarten. Constructivism is a perspective in the field of education that is based upon experimental learning.Children learn by playing and exploring, therefore they need to be in a learning environment that promotes play, movement and hands on learning. Following a curriculum that is based on constructivism allows children to explore, discover and be active participants in the learning process.

Play is fun but it is also a child's work, it is what they do- PLAY. When children play, they learn early math and language and develop skills for academic success.When a child is playing with blocks, he or she is counting, predicting, calculating and measuring, all which are skills required for mathematics. When a child is playing house, he or she is developing social emotional skills that help them build their character.

Children are not meant to be sitting at a desk for long periods of time. Doing so causes boredom and day dreaming. Children have the need to be active.Being active promotes learning. By having a curriculum that is constructive based, children will be able to learn by being hands on with tools. Children will learn by exploring their classroom. They will also learn by doing. Children will learn by tinkering and getting messy using play dough, paints, flubber, moon sand and other  sensory items.All the while children are actually learning how to count, write, spell, listen and learn. Yes, learn. Children who are active inside the classroom are learning how to solve problems and be creative, which are two qualities that are needed to be successful individuals.

Across the Web

Hello everyone, thank you for being a part of Loorducation. Lately I have been preparing for my state exams. Got one down : ). As well, I am always working on projects, activities, posts, updates and all things early childhood education. It is my passion. For a while now I have owned www.loorducation.com and have many ideas for the site. I just have to get it all organized. It is very exciting to think of all the wonderful possibilities. For now Loorducation is all across the web, of course in blog form. A big thing for us right now is www.facebook.com/loorducation. That is where I share my ideas, pics, activities and other things education related. I hope you all stop by and give my page a like and follow if you do not do so already and if you do, I ma hoping you can share with some friends. I also do a lot of autism advocacy and awareness/acceptance on my facebook page. What you see on that page is a part of what I intend Loorducation.com to be. A place where ideas can be shared. Facebook is a great tool to "get out there". The community I have continues to grow with more support all the time. I am excited that people are excited about what I have offered this past year on Loorducation, and still there is so much more to do and learn. About this wordpress blog in which I started because of an M.Ed. program requirement has become a forefront to share my son's autism journey and it has opened doors to help others. Yet, this is only the beginning. In order to spread awareness and enlightenment, I started www.loorducation.blogspot.com back in April. For the most part, I just copy and paste what is here, give it a different title or what have you. Sometimes I may add a unique touch. This was to branch out and gain a bigger audience, to spread my messages and share my passion. Loorducation is on www.instagram.com/loorducation where I use it as a virtual photo album to share experiences of teaching, learning and education. I like to call it education in pictures and i hope you can check it out. I take great pride and passion in creating my photos in which I take my self and edit them. They are all so special and mean a lot. They come from the heart and are captured in a natural state, no staging. Seeing my photos will give you a look into what I love to do and the outcomes of my work and journey. I have also used Flipboard to make some flip magazines for Loorducation. It was something fun and I used it as another tool on the web to get the name Loorducation out there and to learn differnt ways in which i may present my craft. Let's not forget about www.twitter.com/loorducation. It is a positive community where you never know who you are going to meet and inspire or who may inspire you. I have www.facebook.com/loorducation posts automatically connected to it, so whatever I post on FB will go right there. A great, faster, effective way to get your message and voice out there. There are many things to learn and a good thing to be a part of too. On www.pinterest.com/loorducation, you can see some things that are of my interest, pics of things I love and care about, arts and crafts, etc. I use it sparingly until I have some created some more products and/or activities to share. What I am up to...or should it be "What? I am up, too."

I am coming to the end of week 4 for this module. It is the very last class, EDU 699. My Capstone Project class. I am working on my thesis/project. It is a lot of work and dedication but it will be so worth it. It will all pay off. I am going back and forth, doing different things that correlate with my project, this is so that I do not get overwhelmed. I have created a site, as a part of my project. It is called www.constructivekinder.weebly.com and as of now, the site is in its very early stages. I am figuring everything out. I also have to put together my Kindergarten curriculum and write a paper about it. So in all I have to design my product. I also have to present it and that would be in the written form. That is how I chose to do it. Also, I am going to showcase it using the website in which I am creating. It is a long process but everything is coming together. I have the printed syllabus with me as a guide. Also in EDU 698, I had written a whole plan on my project where I researched my subject and followed a time line. There is about 4 weeks left until graduation. It is getting exciting because I will get to present my work for others to see. My chosen subject is a great passion of mine. I love early childhood education. It is great. I am developing a Kindergarten curriculum that is based on the constructivist theory of education. All about more hands on activities and integration of play into academics.It is awesome. I can not wait to share it with you all soon. My plan alone was about 16 pages, just to give you an idea of what I am in for : ). It is helpful because it is used as a guide. I also am creating and collecting artifacts. This has to be top notch. It is my very last class. One day, maybe I will go for my Phd or EdD...hmm do not want to think about that yet. Surviving a Masters curriculum is a constant learning experience to say the least. I am doing it for me, for the future of education. I have learned so very much this past year. Education is imperative. Education is diverse. It is something that we all need. I thrive on it. If it was too easy, it would not be as worth it. My concentration is in teaching and learning. I have gained a lot of respect for the many different teaching styles as well as learning styles that exist. I want to be in the evolution of education.
